Saskatoon · Soil · Software
The ground between saturated and dry is where most of civil engineering actually lives. Del Fredlund wrote the science of it. Murray Fredlund wrote the software. This is the family that taught the world what unsaturated soil can carry.
A farm kid from Saskatchewan who built little dams across the stream behind the house — then spent 50+ years building the science that keeps real ones standing. Ph.D. under Norbert Morgenstern at the University of Alberta (1973); 34 years teaching at the University of Saskatchewan; supervisor to 65+ graduate students; head of the Golder unsaturated soils practice after "retirement."
He pioneered the theory of unsaturated soil behavior — the stress state variables, the shear-strength framework, the water-retention mathematics — and carried it from journals into worldwide practice, from Hong Kong's slopes to Vietnam's universities.
B.E. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan — then a bet, in 1997, that his father's science belonged in software. SoilVision Systems began as a knowledge base for estimating unsaturated soil properties and grew into a finite-element suite covering seepage, slope stability, stress-deformation, contaminant transport, heat and air flow.
By the time Bentley Systems acquired SoilVision in 2018, SVSLOPE held a market-leading position in 3D slope stability analysis, used on dams, mines and levees worldwide. He went on to guide geotechnical strategy at Bentley, and co-authored the 2012 textbook with his father — the theory and the tools, on one title page.
The methods that changed the textbooks
Classical soil mechanics assumed the ground was saturated. Del Fredlund built the applied science for everything above the water table — where suction gives soil strength the old equations couldn't see.
Net normal stress and matric suction — two independent variables, grounded in continuum mechanics, that describe unsaturated soil without leaning on material properties. The paper was rejected once, published unchanged elsewhere, then earned the CGS Colloquium Award. It became the foundation of the field.
The φᵇ term quantifies how matric suction adds strength — why a sandcastle stands, and why a cut slope that survived the dry season fails in the rain. It made the strength of the vadose zone computable.
The equation in the hero chart above — a continuous function for water content across the full suction range, from saturation to oven-dry at 10⁶ kPa. It's the property function that unlocks every unsaturated analysis, and it carries the family name in every major geotechnical package.
After the 1972 Po Shan Road landslide killed 78 people, Fredlund was retained to study Hong Kong's rain-driven slope failures. His team's suction measurements — largely stable at depth, collapsing near the surface during rainfall — helped establish the surface-sealing practice that made the territory's steep slopes safer. Slope stability under weather became his life's applied question.

The General Limit Equilibrium formulation didn't add another competing method — it showed that every method of slices is the same Newtonian bookkeeping with different assumptions. Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1977. Still how slope-stability software is organized today.
Interactive · why suction matters
The ochre band is matric suction — strength the classical model ignores. Rain raises the water table, suction collapses, and the factor of safety follows. This is the physics Del formalized and Murray shipped.
1997 → 2018 · SoilVision Systems
SoilVision started in Saskatoon as a database that could estimate unsaturated soil properties — the practical bottleneck of his father's science — and grew, product by product, into a full geotechnical modeling suite.
In 2018, Bentley Systems acquired SoilVision alongside PLAXIS to anchor its geotechnical portfolio — Saskatchewan soil science, embedded in the software that designs dams, mines, and levees worldwide. Murray stayed on to guide geotechnical strategy before returning to independent practice as Fredlund Geotechnical.

The Fredlund family
"Find needs and try to meet them."
Del grew up on a Saskatchewan grain farm, damming the creek that ran through it. The curiosity survived; the dams got bigger.
Del taught himself mandolin, then alto sax. Then he met JoAnne — two degrees in piano performance, and in his words, the best pianist in Canada. He married her. Music has anchored the family ever since.
For decades the Fredlund home opened to graduate students every Saturday night — 65+ of whom Del supervised into the profession. Two shipping containers of donated textbooks later reached Hanoi's empty libraries.
